How to Get a Business Fax Number

Historically, businesses paid for a landline phone to connect a physical fax machine to send and receive fax transmissions. Some fax machines shared the office’s phone line, which kept it busy during transmissions. Online faxing circumvents this problem.

The advantages of a business using online faxing over analog (landline) include:

  • Saves money: No monthly phone line expense, no materials costs, and no service calls to fix the fax machine!
  • Saves time: Eliminates slow dial-up connections and tied-up phone lines. Enables sending and receiving multiple faxes at the same time from your computer or mobile device.
  • Saves frustration: Online fax services are compatible with the modern, tech-savvy office. No down time from paper jams or malfunctions.
  • Free online storage: Every Fax.Live account includes free document storage of sent and received faxes, as long as your account is active.

When you use an online fax service like Fax.Live, you get a dedicated fax number with your business’ online account. It’s yours as long as your account remains active. When you send a fax, the recipient will get your fax with that number attached. Additionally, you can share your fax number with partners and other businesses, and add it to your website and printed marketing materials.

FAQs About Business Fax Numbers

How much does it cost to set up a fax number?

Fax numbers are free to set up when you have an active Fax.Live subscription. Create a Fax.Live account, pick a Fax.Live plan, and then set up your fax number to receive faxes. New customers may request a specific area code to match your business’ area code (subject to availability).

Can I get a toll-free fax number?

No. Fax.Live doesn’t offer toll-free numbers, such as those starting with 800 or 888. Every Fax.Live number has a standard area code, and you can request the one you want. If it’s available, it’s yours. People who fax you are billed by their own phone carrier, just like any regular call. Most phone plans include nationwide calling, but a sender with long-distance charges on their plan may pay them when faxing a number outside their area.

Can you get a local business fax number?

New Fax.live customers may request specific area codes. For example, a local business can request an area code that matches its business telephone area code or a specific area where they do business.

Is my fax number separate from my business’ phone number?

Yes, your fax number is absolutely separate from your business’ phone number. You keep your business number and we’ll provide the fax number. This means you can use your business number any time you want without having to worry about it being busy sending or receiving a fax.

Will my business be able to receive faxes at my Fax.Live number?

Yes, once you’ve set up a Fax.Live number, anyone at your business can log into your Fax.Live account to receive faxes. Your Fax.Live account becomes the interface for your business to receive faxes. Our dashboard allows you to create contacts to see who sent you a fax and use that contact information to send out faxes.

Do I need a landline for my fax number?

No, when you use Fax.Live or a similar digital fax service, the transmission takes place over the internet. No landlines or fax machines required. All that you need is an active Fax.Live account.
